ACCA’s Three-Level Structure
ACCA consists of 13 exams organized into three progressive levels, plus an ethics module and a practical experience requirement. Understanding this structure upfront helps you plan your study timeline realistically.
Applied Knowledge Level (3 Papers)
The foundation level covers Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), and Financial Accounting (FA) — building core concepts in business operations, cost accounting, and financial statements.
Applied Skills Level (6 Papers)
This level covers Corporate and Business Law (LW), Performance Management (PM), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA), and Financial Management (FM) — building the technical toolkit you’ll use throughout your career.
Strategic Professional Level (4 Papers)
The final level includes two mandatory papers — Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) and Strategic Business Leader (SBL) — plus two optional papers chosen from Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Performance Management (APM), Advanced Taxation (ATX), and Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA).
Ethics and Professional Skills Module
Alongside the exams, ACCA requires completion of the Ethics and Professional Skills Module, which develops workplace skills like communication, analysis, and professional judgment.
Practical Experience Requirement
To become a full ACCA member, you also need 36 months of relevant, supervised work experience, which can often be completed alongside your studies.
How Long Does It Take?
Most students complete ACCA in 3–4 years, though timelines vary based on exemptions (for degree holders), study pace, and pass rates on each attempt. If the workload feels daunting, our guide to common ACCA challenges and how to overcome them can help you plan around it.
